About Impact Canada

Announced in Budget 2017, Impact Canada is a Government of Canada-wide effort to help federal departments and agencies accelerate the adoption of outcomes-based funding approaches to deliver measurable and concrete results to Canadians.

How it works

“Challenges” are one example of an outcomes-based funding approach which offers financial and other resources to help innovators put their ideas into action. Impact Canada challenges are based on an “open innovation” methodology which focuses resources on the desired outcome, not on cumbersome processes, in order to maximize the impact of the federal investment.

The Government of Canada is issuing challenges under Impact Canada to domestic and global innovators to generate innovative solutions to some of the biggest issues that face Canadians and their communities. These challenges reward the best solutions that can achieve stronger social, environmental, and economic outcomes for citizens.

This Impact Canada challenge platform is a core component of the initiative. It allows Government of Canada departments and agencies to issue challenges on a common site and reach a diverse group of problem solvers and innovators.

In general, funding available through each challenge will fall under the rules that pertain to grants and contributions funding within the Government of Canada and the Terms and Conditions of Impact Canada led by the Privy Council Office. As funding and eligibility criteria differs for each challenge, please consult individual challenge pages for details.
